William Lundie & Co

There is no Lismore distillery. The name belongs to an island in the Inner Hebrides, sitting between Mull and the Scottish mainland, where no legal whisky distilling has ever been recorded. The whisky that carries the name comes instead from Wm. Lundie & Company, a Speyside blender and bottler that assembles and sells the Lismore range without operating a still house of its own. The single malt inside is sourced from an undisclosed Speyside distillery, and the company has never named it.

History & Heritage

The Lundie family has been involved in Scotch whisky broking since 1904, buying and selling filled casks in a trade that rarely put its own name on a label. The firm behind Lismore was established in the 1950s by brothers John and Willie Lundie, though the exact year is not recorded. Wm. Lundie & Company was formally incorporated on 7 August 1974 as a private unlimited company, number SC056140, and remains active on the UK register, with its most recent confirmation statement dated 28 July 2025.

The Lismore brand itself was the work of the second generation, Alan and Bruce Lundie. Its creation date is genuinely disputed: the brand's own account and Master of Malt place it in 1974, while ScotchWhisky.com's timeline dates the brand to 1978 and reserves 1974 for the company's incorporation. Both are documented, and this directory reports the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side.

In 2004, J&G Grant, the family firm that owns Glenfarclas Distillery, acquired the William Lundie cased-goods operation along with its brands. As of July 2026, Wm. Lundie & Company remains the direct owner of the Lismore brand and a subsidiary of J&G Grant, operating from an office at Rechlerich, Ballindalloch, Moray. That address is where the business sits, not evidence of where the whisky is distilled.

The Whiskey

Lismore is a blending and bottling house, and its range reflects that. It spans sourced single malt from no-age-statement through 21 years, blended Scotch at five, eight, 12 and 18 years, a no-age-statement cask strength release, and The Legend 21 Year Old. The Special Reserve bottlings are blends rather than single malts, a distinction retailers often blur. Lismore 21 Year Old and Lismore The Legend 21 Year Old are separately documented expressions, and The Legend is the limited release associated with sherry hogshead maturation.

The company states that its single-malt Scotch is aged in oak barrels in Speyside. Lismore Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the core expression, is described as light amber, with a sweet floral nose carrying crisp fresh apples, a delicate and very smooth palate showing light toffee, and a long, pleasing finish. Glenfarclas is frequently rumored as the source distillery given the ownership, but that has never been confirmed and should not be treated as fact.

Lismore is a useful reminder that a great deal of Scotch reaches the glass through brokers and blenders rather than through distilleries that market themselves.
