Inverhouse Distillers

Inver House Distillers is a Scotch whisky company headquartered at Moffat Distillery on Towers Road in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, and it quietly stands behind five working Highland and Speyside malt distilleries. Founded in 1964, it has spent six decades turning out single malt and blended Scotch while passing through a run of transatlantic owners, and today it sits inside one of Asia's largest drinks groups.

History & Heritage

Inver House was formally established in 1964 as a subsidiary of the American firm Publicker Industries of Philadelphia, with S. S. Neuman serving as chairman at its founding. In 1979 the business passed to Standard Brands, and in January 1988 a Scottish management team led by Bill Robison and Angus Graham bought it out of Standard Brands for 8.2 million pounds. Independence was short-lived. In October 2001 Inver House was purchased by Pacific Spirit (U.K.) Ltd for 56 million pounds, part of the Great Oriole Group tied to Thai businessman Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi. In 2006 Pacific Spirits UK, and with it Inver House, was folded into International Beverage Holdings, the international arm of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited. The company is, as of 2026-07, a subsidiary of ThaiBev, aligned under its International Beverage division for premium spirits.

The Whiskey

Inver House owns and operates five malt distilleries in Scotland: Balblair, Balmenach, Knockdhu, Old Pulteney, and Speyburn. From these come single malts including anCnoc (distilled at Knockdhu), Balblair, Old Pulteney, and Speyburn, alongside the blended Scotch brands Hankey Bannister, Catto's, and MacArthur's. Balmenach additionally distills Caorunn Gin in copper pot stills. Traditional methods run through the estate: worm tub condensers and long fermentations of 56 to 90 hours at Balmenach, worm tubs and Granty Burn water feeding Speyburn's output of more than four million liters a year, and a compact one-wash, one-spirit-still setup at Knockdhu near 1.4 million liters annually. The Balblair range is bottled at 46% ABV, natural in color and non-chill-filtered, while many core Speyburn, Knockdhu, and Old Pulteney expressions are bottled at 40% ABV. The Airdrie headquarters holds blending, laboratory, and warehousing capacity for roughly 500,000 barrels.

Why It Matters

For a company most drinkers have never heard named, Inver House is responsible for an outsized share of respected Highland and Speyside whisky. Its shelf of awards tells the story: the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1992, Scottish Distiller of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2013, five medals at the 2016 Global Distillery Masters, Old Pulteney's World Whisky of the Year in 2012 and World's Best Single Malt for the 1989 Vintage in 2016, and Whisky Distiller of the Year at the 2017 Icons of Whisky. That combination of unshowy corporate ownership and genuinely serious liquid is exactly what a whiskey library exists to untangle.

Visiting the Distillery

Several of the group's sites welcome visitors. Old Pulteney's visitor centre in Wick draws thousands of UK and international guests each year, Balblair operates a visitor centre and brand home, Speyburn opened permanently to visitors in 2023, and Balmenach maintains a small brand home around Caorunn Gin. Knockdhu, home of anCnoc, does not run a visitor centre.
