Independent blender
Compass Box Whisky Co.
London, England · international · Founded 2000
Compass Box Whisky Co. owns no stills, no mash tuns, and no warehouse full of family legend, and that is precisely the point. Founded in a London kitchen by an American who had spent years inside the Scotch whisky establishment, Compass Box set out to prove that blending is a craft worthy of the same respect as distilling. More than a quarter century on, it is hard to name a company that has done more to change how the whisky world thinks about blends.
History & Heritage
John Glaser, an American who came up through the wine trade before joining the marketing team at Johnnie Walker, founded Compass Box in 2000, working out of the kitchen of his West London home. The company grew into a blending house headquartered in Richmond, London, with its own stocks of maturing whisky held in Scotland.
Compass Box has never been shy about picking fights it considered worth having. In 2005, the Scotch Whisky Association objected to the inner oak staves used in the original Spice Tree, forcing a redesign around toasted French oak cask heads. In 2015, the association ruled that disclosing the full component ages of its blends violated regulations; Compass Box answered with a public transparency campaign, joined by Islay's Bruichladdich distillery. Bacardi held a minority stake from 2015 until 2022, when London-based Caelum Capital became majority shareholder, a position it still holds as of July 2026. Glaser stepped down from day-to-day leadership in 2024, remaining a shareholder and leaving the whiskymaking team he built to carry the house style forward; since 2025 that team has been led by Director of Whisky Making Angela D'Orazio.
The Whiskey
Compass Box is a blender, not a distiller. Its whiskymakers select malt and grain whiskies from distilleries across Scotland, then blend and further mature them, often in custom casks. The result is a range that treats blending as recipe-driven creative work. Hedonism, the company's first release in 2000, was a blended grain Scotch at a time when grain whisky was dismissed as filler; The Sentinel Room carries the current edition, Compass Box Hedonism Blended Grain Scotch Whisky 2026 Limited Annual Release. Compass Box Great King Street Glasgow Blend carries the smoky, sherried profile that took gold at the 2023 World Whiskies Awards. Compass Box Story of The Spaniard leans on Spanish wine casks; the blender retired it and The Spice Tree in 2024, replacing them in the signature range with Compass Box Crimson Casks and Compass Box Nectarosity, which show the sherry-led and orchard-fruit sides of the house.
Why It Matters
For decades the received wisdom held that single malts were art and blends were commerce. Compass Box dismantled that idea bottle by bottle, arguing through its releases that a well-built blend demands more creative judgment than most single casks. Its transparency campaign pushed the entire industry toward honesty about what is actually in the glass. The Sentinel Room holds eight Compass Box expressions in its Reserve Whiskey Library, a working argument for those who appreciate good whiskey that the blender's craft deserves a seat at the table.
Visiting the Distillery
Compass Box operates a brand home at 3 Water Lane, Richmond, London, rather than a distillery. A Tasting Experience (£40) runs 3pm to 5pm on Mondays, Fridays, and alternate Thursdays, with a welcome cocktail, a look at the blending room, and a guided tasting of the signature range. A Blending Session (£80) on alternate Thursdays adds the chance to build a 100ml custom blend of your own.
